I saw an item on the news about some guy who had a multi-million dollar company based on salvaging semiconductor parts from electronic/computer equipment thrown in the trash by companies. The guy who created this company stated that he was getting so much material from the trash that he made arrangements with some companies to just pick up their trash computer equipment (so that he didn't have to dig the stuff out of the garbage bins).

Since I saw this on tv, I just assumed that everyone was aware of this and that every company in Manhattan had some ARRANGEMENT with some beauch to pick-up their trash. Apparently, I was wrong on this point.

There are certain "routes" in Manhattan that I always seem to take and I have noticed a number of companies throwing some very useful stuff in the trash on my routes.

Most of the time the problem is that I am not expecting anything useful to be in the trash while I'm walking down the street. I usually have no way to actually carry most of the stuff I find home. I guess the solution is to find out what schedule these people are on so that I have a handy little cart to load up.

Some of the things that I have found in the trash:

( a ) what appears to be a new unused HP Color Deskjet printer;
( b ) new unused software, it was about one rev out of date, but still it was new and unused;
( c ) a box of printer-ready labels;
( d ) an Apple Lisa Computer; this one wasn't actually thrown in the trash but it was about to be thrown in the trash;

As far as I can tell, there must be some kind of legal/insurance requirement that certain equipment that a company records as "trash" actually be thrown in the trash and not given to employees. When I was walking down the street and saw a new apparently never used HP Color Deskjet printer in the trash and picked it up, the company employees who had thrown the printer out seemed pissed off that they couldn't take the printer themselves.

I have so many projects at home that never seem to ever get done. I can actually stare at something, trip over something for years in my apartment before I act.

the candles and radio that I used on 9/11, were bought like three years before the event and I just stared at them on a shelf never doing anything with them until...

One of my big important projects is to actually document what is actually on one of my web hosting accounts.

I printed out pages from the directories on the account and my mission was to punch holes in the pages, put the pages in this plastic page protectors with the black backing, and then to put the pages into a notebook. I have all of this needed stuff lying around my apartment. In fact, I ran across some of the plastic paper protectors with black backing about a week ago. But I never got around to searching for more page protectors and a notebook to put the pages in.

Well, today I found a notebook full of plastic page protectors in this company's trash bin when I was in Mid-town. The trash bin also had two new looking plastic/foldable typing stands.

Plastic foldable typing stands are a valuable thing to me because I have a lot of Tablet PCs around the house. One of the things that works well to hold up a Tablet PC at a good angle is a Plastic Typing Stand.

Trash Orgy

There was a trash orgy today. Hey, I have no shame, I know how much money and time and touble it is to find some slightly older computer equipment. So, I have no problem digging this stuff out of a trash bin.

For example, if you buy an older Tablet PC, chances are that the Tablet PC will have a pcmcia interface. The PCMCIA interface was used on a lot of older computers and laptops, but is not on newer computers and laptops.

Now, I bought a few older laptops on ebay just so that I could have something with a PCMCIA interface to manage my Tablet PCs. When I bought a few older laptops (especially older IBM laptops), I found that the power cord could cost more than the computer. The power cords for some older IBM computers and adapter/interfaces for some older IBM computers can be very hard to find and rather expensive (when you consider that they cost more than the computers they fit).

Well, today there was a trash bin full of IBM power cords for every manner of IBM computer. There were power cords, interfaces (used for connecting external devices to laptops), external floppy disk drives and, get this, hard drives.

I actually found 3 or 4 hard drives in the trash. I just put one of these harddrives in my hard drive enclosure and the fhaking thing still works and it still has all of the company's data on it. I can never have too many hard drives; I have these hard drive enclosures that I can put hard drives in and then connect the hard drives via a PCMCIA connector to my computers. More or less, I can use hard drives like big giant cd rom drives.

Other neat things I found but don't yet know if they work are:

(a) a 8mb PCMCIA memory card
(b) an old external modem
(b) some kind of PCMCIA networking cards
